Description

Join the High Power Engineering team at SpaceXAI to design, build, operate, and maintain electrical infrastructure for AI training campuses. As a Lead Engineer for Battery Storage, you will work on-site in Memphis, TN, with a small team to scale high-capacity power systems according to compute demand.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the storage fleet as a power plant, focusing on architecture, sizing, controls, safety, and grid-forming behavior.
  • Develop BESS architecture, including pack-to-MV-transformer grouping, string composition, and medium-voltage collection topology.
  • Determine sizing requirements based on compute duty cycles, step loads, and training-job ramps.
  • Establish inverter control strategy, including grid-forming versus grid-following, droop, and virtual inertia.
  • Create the plant controller and EMS functional specification for dispatch, state-of-charge management, and peak shaving.
  • Develop the fire and life-safety case, adhering to UL 9540 and 9540A standards.
  • Manage the OEM relationship, including technical requirements, factory testing, and performance guarantees.
  • Direct various teams, including Design, Commissioning, Ops/Build, Network, Civil, and Program Manager.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in power systems engineering.
  • 4+ years of experience directly related to utility-scale or large commercial and industrial battery energy storage.

Preferred Skills and Experiences:

  • Experience sizing storage against real duty cycles.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 855, UL 9540 and 9540A, IEEE 1547, and IEEE 2800.
  • Utility-scale BESS fleet experience.
  • Understanding of grid-forming inverter control.
  • Experience with PSCAD or other EMT modeling.
  • Professional Engineering license or intention to seek one.
  • Experience building and leading an engineering team.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to perform hands-on work in various environments.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to remain focused in hazardous environments while wearing PPE.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted.
  • Availability for 24/7 on-call support for emergencies.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • On-site work in Memphis, TN, with up to 25% travel for work-related activities.
