We accelerate innovation, investment and productivity through world-class science, research and development.

We use technology for good by ensuring new and existing technologies are safely developed and deployed across the UK, with the benefits more widely shared.

We are driving forward a modern digital government which gives citizens a more satisfying experience and their time back.

We do all this to enable the Government's 5 national missions: kickstarting economic growth, making Britain a clean energy superpower, taking back our streets, breaking down barriers to opportunity and building an NHS fit for the future.

Above all, we focus on improving people's lives. Whether it's researching new treatments for disease, developing better batteries, reducing burdens through better public services, keeping children safe online, and much more, outcomes for citizens are at the heart of what we do.

**Job description**

In the Digital Infrastructure Directorate, we work to create the conditions that will ensure world-leading communications infrastructure and services are available to every UK individual and business, in order to support economic growth and enrich lives.

The successful candidate will work lead our Monitoring and Evaluation work across DI, providing direction and leadership to ensure programmes have robust monitoring and evaluations in place.

The role will primarily focus on evaluating our research and innovation programmes designed to promote the development and adoption of future telecoms technologies including 5G, OpenRAN and Advance Communication Technologies (ACT) programmes.

We are currently at different stages of evaluating (or implementing findings from the evaluation of) the following programmes that are driving telecoms research, innovation, and technology implementation across the UK economy:

- Our £200m 5G Testbed and Trials (5GTT) Programme which was established in 2017 to stimulate market development and deployment of 5G technology and infrastructure in the UK.

- Our £250m Open Networks Programme was launched in 2021 to build a more competitive and diverse telecoms equipment supply chain following recent and ongoing changes in the market.

- Our 5G Innovation Regions: A £40m fund that was aimed to accelerate 5G adoption in regions by bridging the gap between the technical trials undertaken in the 5GTT Programme and using 5G in the real world.

- Our Smart Infrastructure Pilots: A £3m allocation to Local Authorities for Local Authorities and Private Sector Companies to work together to implement Smart Lampposts.

- UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL) which provides an independent testing environment to evaluate hardware and software (5G core, RAN equipment) used in UK telecoms networks.

You will lead and manage the evaluations for these programmes, as part of our evaluation team with support from our wider team of analysts.

This will include providing advice and assurance on Monitoring and Evaluation plans for Business Cases, supporting legislation with Impact Assessments, Post Implementation Reviews, and social research best practice for consultations, surveys and research specifications.

Due to the nature of our work, you will also get the opportunity to work on evaluations of other schemes, such as the rollout of gigabit broadband.

And you will get the opportunity to travel to events and meet with project organisations and industry situated across the UK.
