## Description

GitLab is seeking a Distinguished Engineer to lead technical direction across its Core DevOps services. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years in a senior technical leadership role. Responsibilities include setting technical direction for CI, CD, Plan, and source code experiences, working with the VP of Engineering, and driving convergence on shared patterns and libraries.

The Distinguished Engineer will be responsible for:

- Setting and refining technical direction for Core DevOps services

- Working with the VP of Engineering on planning and technical investment

- Translating company-wide goals into concrete technical direction

- Defining measurable terms for service quality

- Maintaining a clear picture of systemic technical risk

- Leading design decisions and writing code

- Driving convergence on shared patterns and libraries

- Designing migration paths for large systems

- Adopting platform capabilities from GitLab's AI organization

- Serving as an escalation point for complex technical decisions

- Reviewing significant designs and merge requests

- Ensuring designs respect multi-tenant, compliance, and data governance boundaries

- Partnering with Infrastructure, Security, and SRE

- Making architectural constraints clear to Product

- Writing clear design documents and decision records

- Growing Principal and Staff Engineers

- Participating in Incident Management on-call rotation

The successful candidate will have:

- 10+ years of software engineering experience

- 4+ years in a Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership role

- Deep expertise in AI and ML systems

- Proven track record of leading technical experimentation

- Strong background in scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems

- Experience designing and implementing human-in-the-loop controls

- Experience mentoring senior engineers

- Ability to work effectively in a fully remote, globally distributed organization
