## Description

The mining industry's ability to find new ore deposits has declined, requiring over 10 times more capital to make discoveries compared to 30 years ago. KoBold aims to change this by developing AI models and novel sensors for mineral exploration.

As a Staff Applied Scientist at KoBold's Metalab, you will develop state-of-the-art instruments to collect data for guiding exploration programs. Your responsibilities include:

- Designing, developing, and deploying new mineral exploration data collection instruments and methods

- Developing KoBold's proprietary software exploration tools

- Finding and curating various types of data (geospectral, geophysical, geochemical, geologic, and geographic) and integrating it into KoBold's proprietary data system

- Building models to make statistically valid predictions about the locations of compositional anomalies within the Earth's crust

- Creating effective visualizations for evaluating model performance and enabling rapid interaction with the underlying data and key features

- Developing and applying data processing, statistical, and physics-based techniques to geoscientific data

- Presenting to and collaborating with external partners and stakeholders

- Pushing the state of the art in analysis capabilities by implementing statistically rigorous spatially aware clustering, anomaly detection, and other analysis methods

- Collaborating with data scientists, geoscientists, and engineers to invent and deploy algorithms that combine large and complex data sets for mineral exploration and discoveries

The ideal candidate will have:

- Demonstrated ability to quickly absorb and synthesize complex information with high intellectual rigor

- Exceptional curiosity and eagerness to learn, with a proactive approach to exploring new concepts and technologies

- A successful track record of developing complex equipment with cross-disciplinary teams and vendors

- Extensive experience with physical measurement and data analysis systems, applying scientific knowledge to identify and prototype emerging technologies, systems integration and data acquisition, Python's data science packages, collaborative software development, SQL, cloud computing resources, and building predictive models

- Capacity to dive deep on novel challenging problems in applying ML to mineral exploration

- Experience deploying sensors in the field

In terms of work practices and motivation, you should be able to take ownership and responsibility for large projects, be intellectually curious and eager to learn about mineral exploration, and enjoy working with colleagues across the company.

We offer a salary range of $125,000 to $235,000, equity compensation, medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401k retirement plan, short and long-term disability and life insurance, paid sick time, and parental leave. The role requires remote work with 10-20% travel.
