As a Sr. Associate Director, Software Engineering, you will partner with project teams to understand business requirements and shape them into clear API designs and contracts. You will define and own API standards and design guidelines, drive API-first delivery, and ensure API designs support scalability and microservice architecture patterns. Key Responsibilities: - Partner with project teams to understand business requirements and shape them into clear API designs and contracts. - Define and own API standards and design guidelines (naming, versioning, error handling, pagination, idempotency, backward compatibility). - Drive API-first delivery: produce high-quality API specifications (e.g., OpenAPI) and ensure alignment across microservices. - Ensure API designs support scalability and microservice architecture patterns. - Provide hands-on server-side development leadership (not just oversight), with good working knowledge of client-side needs for browser/mobile consumers. - Leverage AI for programming and has strong engineering practices to improve quality and delivery pace. - Ensure deliveries conform to HSBC controls and engineering governance expectations. - Design APIs with security built in: HTTPS/TLS, certificate handling (including cert pinning where applicable), encryption/decryption, and data protection. - Influence stakeholders with well-considered logic and clear trade-offs. - Actively participate in the Engineering Discipline and associated communities. - Support and unblock development teams through coaching, design reviews, and technical decision-making. Knowledge & Experience/Qualifications: - Proven experience developing web APIs for browser/mobile applications. - Strong experience building scalable components using microservice architecture. - Strong server-side technical experience, including Spring Boot, AWS, and Kong Gateway. - Strong experience with CI/CD and delivery tooling: Jenkins, Git, Jira (and working knowledge of Confluence). - Experience with source control/versioning, specifically GitHub. - Experience with continuous delivery of browser/mobile applications. - Comfortable working in agile, cross-functional teams. - Demonstrated ability to build and lead highly productive teams of technically talented engineers.
