## Description

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Tenant Controls team within Production Engineering. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design, implement, and evolve backend capabilities for a global platform used by millions. You will solve complex problems, influence technical direction, and improve system quality, reliability, and performance.

**Responsibilities:**

- Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance

- Influence team objectives, technical direction, and long-range goals

- Define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness

- Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve delivery practices

- Diagnose and prevent performance and reliability issues at scale, participate in incident response

- Experiment with and integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows

**Requirements:**

- Strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning

- Proficiency in modern backend languages and systems programming

- Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries and migration-safe architectures

- Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear asynchronous written communication

- Experience building or operating agentic AI systems in production
